The FISU Games are coming home: the flag passed to Torino 2025, ready to host the next winter edition

The Universiade is coming home: it all began in Torino in 1959, thanks to the foresight of historic CUS Torino president Primo Nebiolo. At the Closing Ceremony of the Lake Placid 2023 Games there was the handover of the FISU flag between the city located in the New York State and the Regione Piemonte main city, which will host the XXXII World University Winter Games. This is the new name given by FISU to the event that brings together student athletes from all over the planet, from January 13 to 23, in 2025. Just as Olympia with the Olympics, the Flame of Knowledge is guarded under the Mole. Torino is the permanent home of the brazier, located in the courtyard of the Rector’s Office of the University.

Piemonte Land of Sport, reads the claim of the FISU Games. In addition to Torino (figure skating, short track, curling, and ice hockey), four other municipalities will be featured: Bardonecchia (alpine skiing, snowboarding, and freestyle) and Pragelato (cross-country skiing and biathlon) for snow sports, Torre Pellice and Pinerolo for ice hockey. The celebration toward 2025 began in the Herb Brooks Arena, the Lake Placid sports temple where in the 1980 Olympics the U.S. amateurs beat the Soviet professionals by surprise, creating the Miracle on ice. On the very ice rink, now named after the mythical coach Herb Brooks was held the final of the men’s university ice tournament, won by Canada, the last event of the event in which the Italian CUSI delegation won 10 medals, including 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze. One of those in the most precious metal was placed around her neck by 20-year-old Piedmontese Psychology student Elisa Fava, who climbed to the top step of the podium in the parallel snowboarding giant slalom and now dreams of repeating on her home slopes in exactly two years. Overall, this is the best Italian overseas expedition in the history of the World University Games Winter.

Following Mayor Stefano Lo Russo‘s speech, who took the FISU flag from the hands of Lake Placid counterpart Art Devlin, was a performance by the “Pinguini Tattici Nucleari” Italian band, guest for the first time in the United States. The band from Bergamo, third at Sanremo Festival in 2020 and winners last year at the MTV Europe Music Awards, performed two songs from their already platinum-selling album “Fake News“: “Giovani Wannabe” and “Zen“, which made the wild American audience in the packed stands of the Herb Brooks Arena dance.

The ceremony was attended by President of the Regione Piemonte Alberto Cirio, Regional Councillor for Sport Fabrizio Ricca and, in addition to the first citizen, Municipal Councillor for Sport Domenico Carretta, CUSI delegate and Italy’s representative on the FISU Executive Committee Lorenzo Lentini, President of the Torino 2025 Organizing Committee and Edisu Piemonte Alessandro Ciro Sciretti, and Torino 2025 Vice President and President of CUS Torino Riccardo D’Elicio.

«After the Universiade in Naples 2019, it’s Torino 2025’s turn: it will be a new success for the whole country and for Italian sport, as the great result in the medals table of the Italian delegation here in Lake Placid already testifies,” said Lorenzo Lentini, CUSI delegate and Italy’s representative on the FISU Executive Committee. “On the long wave of the success of the 2007 Universiade, Torino will surprise all the Universities in the world: the Italian University Sport Federation – FederCUSI is ready to go».

This is the commentary of the Torino 2025 Organizing Committee with a shared message from President Alessandro Ciro Sciretti and Deputy Vice President Riccardo D’Elicio: «Here in Lake Placid we have come down with a triumphant edition and now begins a downhill journey. The World University Games flag is finally coming home and the countdown begins. We look forward to seeing you all at the Pala Alpitour in Torino on Saturday, January 28 at 9 p.m. to welcome the arrival of the FISU flag and to launch the volunteer recruitment campaign, which will be the heart of our event. Don’t miss the call!».

«We believed from the very beginning in the challenge of bringing the World University Winter Games to our Region and today, in front of thousands of young athletes from all over the World, we can look back at the months of work that preceded this success and say that we made the right bet”, say Regione Piemonte President Alberto Cirio and Regional Councillor for Sport Fabrizio Ricca. “Torino and Piemonte are for the Universiade the equivalent of Athens and Greece for the Olympics. It is from us, in fact, that will forever remain the brazier from which everyone will have to pass to light the fire of their games. The fact that in 2025 the Universiade will return to our territory is a confirmation of this link and a great development opportunity for the tourism system, for the university system and for the tourism of a Region that will see its mountains populated by thousands of young athletes from all over the planet ready to discover the beauty and the potential of Piedmont».

«For the City of Turin it was exciting to participate in the ceremony and to receive from the hands of the mayor of Lake Placid the Universiade flag,” say Mayor Stefano Lo Russo and Councillor for Sport and Major Events Domenico Carretta. “Thanks to excellent teamwork we will have the honor of hosting the 2025 edition, after those of 1966 and 2007. In two years, many young athletes will arrive in Turin eager to win a prestigious medal, University students who will also have the opportunity to visit and discover the beauty of our city. We are proud to emphasize on this occasion that more and more students, from all over the world, are choosing to enroll in our universities as a testament to the high standard of education offered and the professionalism of top faculty».

For the first time at the Turin 2025 Games, the sports competition will be accompanied by the Brain Storm academic challenge, which will gather the best university excellences from around the world who will compete in the disciplines of the mind chosen by the four Piedmont universities and students: they too will dream of winning medals, just like the student athletes engaged on the Piedmont snow and ice. «The Piedmontese University community is ready to welcome the great event of the Torino 2025 Winter Games», declare the 4 Piedmontese Rectors Stefano Geuna, Guido Saracco, Gian Carlo Avanzi and Bartolomeo Biolatti. «We are proud to host this internationally important event on our territory: sport becomes an opportunity to meet and with different cultures, which will allow us to enhance and promote the excellence of the University system, thanks also to the path of approach that will see us engaged for the next two years. Torino 2025 will bring young people from all over the world to Piemonte. An extraordinary opportunity for comparison and stimulation for our entire community».
