The countdown to the FISU World University Games Winter in Lake Placid 2023 has begun. The Italian University Sports Center (CUSI) is ready to take part in the world event that will take place overseas from Thursday, January 12 to Sunday, January 22, 2023. Games that will have a special value for Italy because, at the Closing Ceremony next January 22, there will be the handover of the FISU flag between the first citizen of the U.S. Mayor Art Devlin and Mayor Stefano Lo Russo and that point will be Torino 2025 to trigger its countdown.
Thirty-four athletes will compete for Italy, with a total delegation of more than fifty members incorporating technical staff and medical personnel. On the ice of Lake Placid, we will see also Nikolaj Memola (in the cover photo made by Diego Barbieri/FISG), big star last weekend with its historic success in the junior final of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, an event of which Torino 2025 was Main National Partner and in which the launch of the Ambassador campaign was announced.
“It was 2019 with the Siberian edition in Krasnoyarsk the last appointment of this event” – comments Antonio Dima, CUSI President – “today, four years later, Italy can respond with numbers and quality to the American edition of the Winter Universiade that for the first time in history will change its name. The strong identity that binds the souls of our young student-athletes will be the extra weapon that we will use from the first day of the competitions: they will represent not only university sports Italy and their respective Universities, but above all the generation of freshness, youth and good hopes that the world needs.”
Fifty nations and 2,500 athletes and technicians from all over the world will take part in the event: they will compete in 13 different disciplines including skiing and ice events in a highly technical international sporting event in which athletes with appearances in World Cups, World Championships and even Olympics in their respective disciplines will take part. Lake Placid has already hosted the FISU World University Games Winter under the name Universiade in 1972 and also hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1980.
For the Azzurri of CUSI, the goal is to replenish the historical palmares consisting of more than one hundred and fifty medals, including as many as fifty-three golds, trying to improve on the result of one gold, one silver and one bronze won in Krasnoyarsk (Russia) in the 2019 Universiade. Six different disciplines, sixteen girls and eighteen boys, more than twenty universities represented. A total of nine winter disciplines on the Games calendar, in which student-athletes aged 17 to 25 from more than six hundred universities around the world will compete.
The opening ceremony of the Games is scheduled for the evening of January 12.
