Now the countdown to Torino 2025 is officially on. Following the inspection visit to competition sites in early May, a study of international calendars, and talks in recent weeks with the organizing committee, FISU has released the dates for the XXXII World University Games Winter, which will be held on the snow and ice of Piedmont from January 13 to 23, 2025.
In addition to Turin, four municipalities in the region will host the Games: Bardonecchia and Pragelato for snow sports, and Torre Pellice and Pinerolo for ice hockey. The top university sports event was born under the Mole in 1959 under the name Universiade from the idea of CUS Torino President Primo Nebiolo. Sixty years later, right in Turin in 2019, FISU decided on the new nomenclature, which will be introduced starting with next winter’s review in Lake Placid 2023 (Jan. 12-22): World University Games, for both summer and winter editions.
Incidentally, in September 2022, a U.S. delegation will come to Turin to pick up the Flame of Knowledge to light its own torch, so as to begin the journey to the Games in early 2023. Moreover, next January 22, during the Closing Ceremony, it will be the Italian Organizing Committee that will in turn pick up the baton, bringing the FISU flag back to our country, in view of the 2025 World University Games Winter.
These are the words of Fabrizio Ricca, Sports Councillor of the Piedmont Region and Chairman of the Torino 2025 Honor Committee: “University sport is an inexhaustible source of talents to be discovered and opportunities to be promoted. This makes me proud that our region is hosting the World University Winter Games, because we believe so much in university-born sports. I hope that the athletes and their families can learn to love Piedmont, a Region that has so much to offer and discover.”
And speaking of big events in Piedmont for student athletes, the upcoming event this summer is for the World University Golf Championships, scheduled for July 20-23 at Royal Park I Roveri.
