Happy birthday, Universiade: Torino 1959 started on 27 August. Torino 2025 will launch the innovative BRAINstorm

Happy birthday, Universiade. On Thursday 27 August 1959, the first edition dedicated to student-athletes took place, thanks to the idea of the visionary president of CUS Torino Primo Nebiolo. It lasted until 7 September, taking advantage of the facilities already built to celebrate the centenary of the Unification of Italy two years later (1961). The Opening Ceremony took place at the Stadio Comunale, now known as the Olimpico Grande Torino, where every evening the countdown to the Torino 2025 World University Games Winter can be seen.

The first summer Universiade was organised in Torino by the Centro Universitario Sportivo Italiano (CUSI): 1,407 student-athletes from 43 countries from all continents gathered in the first capital city in Italian history. A flag with a ‘U’ surrounded by five stars in the colours of the five continents (blue, yellow, black, green and red) began its journey around the world, while the traditional academic hymn Gaudeamus Igitur resounded in all official ceremonies as the only official tune of the Games, uniting students from all over the world.

Since then, Torino has been the cradle of University Sport and the permanent home of the Universiade brazier, just like Olympia with the Olympics. This means that every city hosting a summer or winter edition of the event goes to the Rectorate of the Università di Torino to light its Flame of Knowledge.

From summer to winter. From 13 to 23 January 2025, Torino will once again host the XXXII World University Games Winter (this is the new nomenclature given by the FISU). In addition to the city facilities of the Palavela (figure skating and short track) and the PalaTazzoli (ice hockey and curling), four other municipalities of the metropolitan city will play a leading role: Bardonecchia (alpine skiing, snowboarding and freeskiing), Pragelato (cross-country skiing and biathlon), with Torre Pellice and Pinerolo hosting several matches of the ice hockey tournaments.

But the real innovation will be represented by the first world edition of BRAINstorm, the mind challenge for university students developed in collaboration with the four universities of PIemonte and included within the special projects of the World University Games Winter, assigned by FISU to FederCUSI

BRAINstorm includes 9 disciplines (just like the 9 sports that will be contested on the snow and ice of Piedmont), which were selected by Università di Torino, Politecnico di Torino, Università di Scienze Gastronomiche di Pollenzo e Università del Piemonte Orientale. Approximately 1,000 students from all corners of the globe will compete with medals up for grabs, like any self-respecting sports competition. It is already possible to register with your university friends for the national phase, while the international phase will start in 2024.
