Torino 2025 presents itself in Chengdu. From 28th of July to 8th of August, the Sichuan region will host the XXXI World University Games Summer and, for the occasion, the organising committee of the winter event that will be held in 537 days’ time has illustrated its progress report, i.e. how preparations are progressing for the event that will return to Piemonte 18 years after Torino 2007.
A delegation from Torino 2025 led by president Alessandro Ciro Sciretti, deputy vice-president Riccardo D’Elicio and general director Francis Cirianni arrived in China for this important appointment.
This is the comment of the General Director of the Torino 2025 World University Winter Games Francis Cirianni after the presentation that took place in the early afternoon locally:
“The presentation of the progress report is a very important moment of the path leading us to the event that will be held in less than a year and a half, an appointment in the contractual obligations of each Committee with FISU, but which gives the opportunity to present to the FISU Executive Committee the progress of the work in view of 2025. After the flag handover in Lake Placid and the summer edition in Chengdu, which is about to begin, it will finally be our turn, which is why it is very important to update the International Federation on how we are preparing to welcome international delegations from all over the world, exchanging valuable information and contacts both with them and with the Rhine-Ruhr Organising Committee, which will organise the 2025 Summer Games, i.e. a few months after us. Torino 2025 is a great opportunity for the whole region because such prestigious international sharing events do not happen so frequently, and this is why all the players involved, institutional and otherwise, must make their contribution to arriving ready for the Games, which will leave a further legacy in a city with a strong sporting and university background such as Torino”.
Incidentally, in recent days, the Piedmontese capital was included with Milano and Roma in the ranking of the 100 best cities in the world for students. From 13 to 23 January 2025, together with Turin, four other municipalities of the Regione Piemonte will be involved: Bardonecchia, Pragelato, Torre Pellice and Pinerolo. “The Universiade take another important step towards Torino, the city that was their birthplace and is preparing to host them again. As a Region we are proud to have accepted and won this challenge – states Fabrizio Ricca, Councillor for Sport of the Piedmont Region and President of the Commission of Honour of the Torino 2025 Games -. Our region is ready to host thousands of young athletes who will come to discover the beauty of our mountains, our organisational capacity and the excellence of our university fabric. I wish the Piedmontese athletes competing in China triumph in all disciplines”.
During today’s progress report, at the request of the Torino 2025 Organising Committee, a minute’s silence was observed to pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the father of the Universiade, Primo Nebiolo (born on 14 July 1923), and to remember Roch Campana, FISU Secretary General Emeritus and former FISU Secretary General from 1979 to 2007, who passed away last month.
