A look to the future that awaits us. At the Italian Pavilion of Expo 2020 in Dubai, Turin showed herself to the world in an event that was broadcast in live streaming in every corner of the planet. In May of last year, the FISU (the highest world federation in terms of university sport) assigned the organization of the XXXII edition of the World University Games Winter to the CUSI (Italian University Sports Center). From January 13 to 23 in 2025, Piedmont and Turin will be the scene of the event that was created in 1959 by Primo Nebiolo with the name of Universiade.
The Torino 2025 delegation, represented by Fabrizio Ricca (Councilor for Sport of the Piedmont Region and Honorary President of WUG Torino 2025), Alessandro Ciro Sciretti (President of the Organizing Committee of WUG Torino 2025 and President of EDISU Piedmont) and Riccardo D’Elicio (Vice President of WUG Torino 2025 and President of CUS Turin). To play host was the Commissioner General of the Italian Pavilion Paolo Glisenti:«Thanks to Piedmont for starting this journey with an event that involves university students and I hope you will be back here soon in the next few weeks».
Together with Turin, the municipalities of Bardonecchia, Pragelato, Torre Pellice and Pinerolo will be also involved in the organization of the event, that will embrace the whole of Piedmont, its valleys and mountains, representing a crucial opportunity for rebirth for the future after a difficult period such as the one we have been going through for more than two years. An event that will offer sporting events of the highest level and will be sustainable both from an environmental and an economic point of view, leaving a legacy in terms of infrastructures with the athletes’ Villages which, for example, will be transformed into residences for university students.
During the event at the Universal Expo in Dubai, the logo that will accompany Torino from now on was unveiled. The project that was chosen by the organizing committee and approved by FISU was realized by Matteo Belletti, a 24-year-old student from Turin, enrolled in the Faculty of Communication, ICT and Media at the University of Turin.
«I was still a child when there were the 2006 Olympics and the last 2007 Universiade in our city, so I wanted to at least try to be part of this event and I decided to participate in the announcement – he tells at the end of the Ceremony followed in streaming -. I am very excited and proud to have done something great for an important first level event for Turin». Then he adds: «I really like winter sports, even alpine skiing which I watch a lot on television and I’d like to try cross-country skiing, because it inspires me as a discipline. My favorite champions, indeed champions are Sofia Goggia and then Marta Bassino, who is also from Piedmont. In addition to spending hours programming PC software, I am a sportsman and when I have time I go running because it helps me to clear my mind and relax».
Future and present mix towards the XXXII Winter University World Games. The approach path called ROAD TO 2025 foresees in just over a month another major event organized by CUS Torino in collaboration with the University of Turin and the Polytechnic as JUST THE WOMAN I AM, scheduled for Sunday 6 March 2022 and in support of University in cancer research. This summer, however, from 20 to 23 July, the Royal Park I Roveri will host the University Golf Championships, another fundamental showcase for Turin on the world.
The interventions of the speakers follow:
Leonz Eder (Acting President FISU) «To promote the 2025 FISU World University Games Torino at the World Expo is not only a unique opportunity, but also the first time that an Organizing Committee uses this extremely interesting platform to address a huge audience. Both FISU and the WUG 2025 Torino will profit from this great occasion. I would like to thank the Italian Government for allowing the presentation of the WUG 2025 logo at the World Expo that will undoubtedly attract the highest attention and thus really launch this major event. And I congratulate the leaders of CUS Torino, the City of Torino and the Region of Piedmont for their always outstanding contribution to the University Sports Movement worldwide. FISU and Torino, this has been a success story since the foundation of FISU in Torino in 1949 and the first Universiade in the capital of Piedmont in 1959 and has enabled a deep bond between FISU and CUS Torino over all these decades. FISU is very grateful to CUS Torino, to CUSI, the city of Torino and the Region of Piemonte for the continuous support of University Sports and for the will to organize big University Sport Event regularly».
Fabrizio Ricca (Councilor for Sport of the Piedmont Region and Honorary President of WUG Turin 2025): «We worked hard to achieve this result: Piedmont immediately believed in the importance of hosting the Winter University World Games in its territory and after months of commitment has managed to achieve this result. The presentation of the logo that will accompany our games is a starting point. We will be able to organize the sporting event that university students from all over the world deserve and we will be able to make them fall in love with Turin and Piedmont»
Alessandro Ciro Sciretti (President of WUG Torino 2025 and President of EDISU Piemonte): «It’s an extraordinary emotion to be in a wonderful place like this and in this pavilion that is the seat of Italian pride in the world. The excellences of our Country are told here for which I thank the organizers for their hospitality and we humbly want to enter the offer that the country will offer on the international scene in the coming years. It’s an historical day for us and for Italy that can be told through the university excellence of our country. We are proud to be the first organizing committee to come to Expo and we ask you to follow us on this path that focuses on inclusion in all senses. A project on which we are working with our team of young people already at work with an eye towards 2025 ».
Riccardo D’Elicio (Deputy Vice President of WUG Torino2025 and President of CUS Torino): «This exhibition of the Dubai Expo is a splendid showcase for the Turin 2025 Winter University World Games and for the project that we have already started and that we are carrying out since a different time to relaunch the city and our universities. Students who come to Turin must have dedicated services and sport must complete their training, helping them to better integrate into this reality. In addition, through major events such as the one that awaits us in less than three years, we can truly become a global reference point for the university sports world».
During the event, messages from the President of the Piedmont Region Alberto Cirio and the Mayor of Turin Stefano Lo Russo were also read:
Alberto Cirio (President of the Piedmont Region): «The Universiade was born in Turin. They were born in Piedmont. And Piedmont can’t wait to return to host them, not only because they represent an extraordinary sporting event, but also because they are a great opportunity to remind the world of the beauty of our territory».
Stefano Lo Russo (Mayor of Turin): “Turin and Piedmont are once again protagonists of world sport with the XXXII edition of the Winter University World Games scheduled for 2025. The Universiade represents a sporting event of great importance that is part of a territorial context that has given – and continues to give – a great added value to the image of Italy as a host country of events of international importance. It will be an edition that will bring Turin back as a protagonist of sport and in particular of the winter one, moreover it will be an edition that has set ambitious goals: respect for the environment by minimizing land consumption, the redevelopment of abandoned urban areas, buildings and artefacts with a very low environmental impact. A working method shared with all the institutions involved. Turin wants to be the protagonist of university sport and major international events».
