Torino lit up for the International Day of University Sport and celebrated it with two flash mobs

Great excitement in Torino for the seventh International Day of University Sport. All started at 12:30 pm with the #To25 Brain Storm, the presentation of the world’s first competition between top talents from Italian and international universities: a brain storm to achieve the millennium goals. The conference was held at the Cavallerizza Reale in Via Verdi 9 (Torino), thanks to the collaboration between the Torino 2025 Organizing Committee and the four universities of Regione Piemonte, which were represented by their respective Magnificent Rectors: Stefano Geuna (University of Torino), Guido Saracco (Polytechnic University of Torino), Gian Carlo Avanzi (University of Eastern Piemonte), and Bartolomeo Biolatti (University of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo).

At the presentation of the project illustrated by Paolo Verri (head of the cultural program of Torino 2025) spoke also Alessandro Ciro Sciretti (President of Torino 2025 and Edisu Piemonte), Riccardo D’Elicio (President of CUS Torino and Deputy Vice President of Torino 2025), Livia Di Giovanni (student representative on the Board of Directors of the Polytechnic of Torino), Domenico Carretta (Sports councilor of the city of Torino). The conference was translated into LIS (Italian Sign Language) thanks to the collaboration of Michela Ferraro.

#TO25 Brain Storm is a competition that will involve 1000 young people from all over the world, who will compete in 12 intellectual disciplines, exactly like the 12 (9 compulsory sports + 3 optional) that are usually part of the program of the World University Winter Games. Precisely to resume this subdivision, 9 of the disciplines will be chosen by the four universities from Regione Piemonte.

The 3 disciplines that will complete #To25 Brain Storm will be chosen by students from all over Italy, with the intention of giving an answer to the questions that haunt us most in this millennium. Climate change, energy sustainability, the attempt to have a planet at peace and not at war and the ability to create social cohesion and new models of work.

In 2025, 25 teams made up of 4 people each will compete and try to bring prestige to the respective nations they represent, giving life to an intellectual medal table and a new event that will complement the sporting one. Turin thus confirms itself as the world capital of university sport according to the spirit that Primo Nebiolo has rooted in his heart and mind.

A perfect example of how to excel in all areas is the first Ambassador of Turin 2025, the middle distance runner of the Italian national athletics team Anna Arnaudo (Battaglio CUS Torino and fellow of the AGON Project), sporting and university excellence: «I’m lucky to experience sport and the University at 360 ° and it is an educational experience that I recommend to all young people. Putting scientific research and sport together as I do every day is very nice, declining it in competition gives it an added value to give birth to interesting paths towards the future».

The presentation of #To25 Brain Storm was closed by Verena Burk (FISU Senior EC Member), enthusiastic about this initiative that FISU will promote all over the world: «Dear Italian and US friends, thank you for inviting me to this conference in this such an important day for the FISU, but also for all the international sports federations and for the entire university system. Today we celebrate World University Sports Day for the seventh time and I want to congratulate the organizing committee of Torino 2025, with CUSI and with local organizations for having created a synergy between sports competition and educational activities. FISU will support the Brain Storm competition because it is important, especially for the future of university sport, to work with students from all over the world».

The day continued at 3 pm with the Ceremony organized by CUS Torino with the collaboration of CUSI and FISU: the lighting of the Flame of Knowledge, leaving for Lake Placid, which will host the next edition of the World University Games Winter from January 12 to 22, 2023. Once the brazier was lit at the Rector’s Office of the University of Torino (Via Verdi 8), the path of the flame touched the evocative “Gallery of the Kings” of the Egyptian Museum and the Valentino Castle, home of the Department of Architecture and Design of the Polytechnic University of Torino.

The day became night but the party didn’t stop. At 8:25 pm, a time that recalled the event that from January 13 to 23, 2025 will see Torino and four other municipalities of Piemonte (Bardonecchia, Pinerolo, Pragelato and Torre Pellice) engaged with the competitions of the World University Games Winter, the Mole Antonelliana and the four bridges in the city center were light up with the logo and colors of the event that will bring the best student athletes of snow and ice sports to the Piedmont mountains. A show that embraced the city and was made possible by the collaboration between IREN Group, the City of Torino and CUS Torino.

Afterwards, 276 young people aged between 16 and 30 took part in the photo shoot made by the drone yesterday afternoon in front of the Valentino Castle (historical site of the Polytechnic of Torino).

At the same time, another flash mob started with the choir Giovani Cantori of Torino (ages 14-21) directed by Carlo Pavese performing Gaudeamus Igitur, the FISU official anthem. The young singers then sang Viva la Vida and at the moment showed the famous local band Eugenio in Via Di Gioia. After performing their hit Giovani Illuminati, together with the choir, the sang Give peace a chance. The flash mob was under the artistic direction of Stefano Pesca.
