Mondovì, 26 November – The Torchlight tour of the Torino 2025 FISU World University Games continues, arriving this week in the Province of Cuneo for the final three stages of the Piemonte tour: Mondovì, Cuneo and Pollenzo.
Today in Mondovì, the Italian capital of hot-air balloon flying, the Torch left from Piazza Maggiore to arrive at the Politecnico di Torino headquarters (Via S. Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo 29), where the torch-bearers were welcomed by the institutions and the numerous students from primary and secondary schools and universities involved in the event.
Among the authorities present were Deputy Mayor Gabriele Campora, Regional Councillor Gianna Gancia, Carlo Floris representing the Police Headquarters, Vice-President of the Universiade Organising Committee Riccardo D’Elicio and Vice-Chancellor for Society, Community and Programme Implementation Stefano Sacchi.
“It is with great pride that the Politecnico welcomes the Torch of the World University Games to the Mondovì campus” emphasised Stefano Sacchi, Vice-Rector for Society, Community and Programme Implementation at the Politecnico di Torino. “The WUGs is a competition that we particularly care about, because it combines the values of healthy and fair sportsmanship and respect for rules with those of innovation and ingenuity, as symbolized by the Torch, designed by our students. Moreover, the Torino 2025 Games, much like our University, successfully integrate international dimensions with local communities, and innovation with the preservation of tradition”.
“There is a lot of excitement building up, and I feel it first-hand, for this major university sports event,” commented the Vice-President of the Organising Committee Riccardo D’Elicio. “The journey of the Torch of Knowledge is enriching our region with strong university values, in a land renowned for its gastronomic and cultural heritage. The CUS Torino and the Committee are realizing a dream that will culminate with the conclusion of the XXXII Winter Universiade on January 23, 2025.”
Following Mondovì, the Torch will continue its tour in Cuneo, a city known for agrifood and mechatronics, at the Mater Amabilis campus of the University of Torino on November 28. On November 29, it will reach Pollenzo, home to the University of Gastronomic Sciences.
The organization of the stages is consistently supported by the universities and municipal administrations. The Regional School Office and provincial offices will take young students to witness the passing of the Torch of Knowledge. Torchbearers for these events include athletes and former athletes selected by FederCUSI, CONI Piemonte, and CIP Piemonte sports organizations.
After visiting the main regional university centers, the Torch will travel to the host towns of the Games in December, passing through the competition venues:
- December 10: Pinerolo
- December 12: Torre Pellice
- December 17: Pragelato
- December 20: Sestriere
- December 29: Bardonecchia
The Torch will return to Torino on January 13, 2025, for the Opening Ceremony, marking the start of the XXXII FISU World University Games. Its journey will begin at the historic headquarters of CUS Torino on Via Braccini 1 and follow a city route touching the main parks, competition venues (Pala Tazzoli and Palavela), and mixed paths along local cycling lanes.
